Father Vassey (Michael Rooker) has a problem. Using his two 9mm, laser-sighted cannons he's tracked down and killed the holders of a heretic ceremony meant to bring a demon into the world. Not just any demon, this one's raison d'etre is nothing less than uncreating creation. The problem is that Vassey is too late. The demon has manifested, escaped, and is now on the hunt for the soul of a young boy who is believed to be a saint, due to the stigmata he had at birth. The film is directed by Jamie Dixon, heretofore a special effects supervisor, who shows canny restraint where special effects are concerned. The shadowy demon of the title is depicted often by a fluid black cloud, which is functional without losing its eeriness or credibility. The acting is solid, never campy, though Michael Rooker sometimes feels out of place. And the climactic scenes, built up to with good pacing, are fraught with peril and excitement. All in all, this is a worthwhile effort for a first-time director, and that makes it one of the best direct-to-video releases I've seen in quite a long time. Although I wish I could locate the Bram Stoker story on which it is based. --Jim Gay

Bad effects and storyline. Liked some of the characters including the female vet. Why is it that all professional women, not doctors or lawyers, are vets? Tony Todd has a fun but minor role in the movie. Different from many of the roles he has. Rent it cheaply. Don't buy.

"Shadow Builder" starts with a typical situation involving a religious cult sect and their secret ritual to summon a demon. Gun-wielding "Father" Vassey (Michael Rooker) attempts to stop them, but fails, and the summoned demon seeks the soul of a boy named Chris (Kevin Zegers) living in a small town where the evil begins to wreck havoc on unsuspecting townspeople.

The film is loosely based on Bram Stoker's little-known short story of the same name (included in his book "Under the Sunset," Stoker's earlier work published in 1881). It is a kind of allegorical fantasy, not a tale of horror. The filmmakers are clearly trying to cash in on the name of the author of "Dracula," and most of the film's content has nothing to do with the original.

Actually "Shadow Builder" borrows a lot from other films of the same genre - the evil hiding in the dark, the evil entity getting stronger and the good guys using light as weapon to fight, etc - but borrowing is not always a bad thing. The problem of "Shadow Builder" is it is neither scary as horror, nor exiting as thriller. The story develops too slowly and each scare or action is rather tame. Effects are decent, but the story fails to maintain interest in the middle of the film.

Strong acting from underrated Michael Rooker and special appearance from Tony Todd is not enough for us to keep interested in the film, Its flat storytelling has ruined the potential of the material of the film, which could have been as entertaining as such so-so films as "End of Days."

"DVD is iffy. Movie is JUST ok." 2007-08-11

For a "B" level budget horror flick, the movie's not bad. Going against the current stereotype of Catholic priests, the man of the cloth in this film is a grizzled veteran comfortable with his fists, who protects the boy put under his protection. The demon has some good lines. For a horror movie, it's not bad.

The DVD's iffy. It wouldn't work on one of my newer DVD players, but it DID work on an older player. I suspect this is due to the DVD not being mastered properly. A symptom and a sign of a budget production. No, it's not because the DVD is dirty and needs cleaning. I ordered a replacement copy from Netflix before concluding that the DVD was improperly mastered.

This is based on a Bram Stoker story, and I'd love to see the story. Surely his story didn't include electricity, generators, police cars, guns - well, of course it didn't. It couldn't have.

But this is, all in all, a pretty good horror film. There aren't really any points in the film where I'm terrified, but the story line remains solid throughout the film. My main complaints are the casting of Michael Rooker as a priest (even if he has a troubled past), and the special effects - which somehow won an award from an obscure award ceremony, Fantafestival. The Shadowbuilder himself really wasn't all that convincing.

Still, this was a horror film that began and ended with the same premise. It didn't deviate, and its characters didn't commit random acts of remarkable stupidity. It was a wholly believable story (in terms of being a movie, of course), and Kevin Zegers gave a good performance as the 12 year old that the Shadowbuilder wanted to possess.

One other complaint that I have - if Zegers's character is supposed to be this special person (I'll let the film explain why he is), why didn't he exhibit any special traits?

By the way, neither the DVD cover that Amazon has as its image, nor the actual cover that I received when I ordered it, has anything to do with the movie. Poor packaging, even though the cover I received was "cool". The one Amazon has depicts a blonde boy. Last I checked, and for his entire career, Zegers has been a brunette.

"Contact" having long been a favorite of mine, and Sharon Stone and Dustin Hoffman being on that list as well, I couldn't resist the combo and was not disappointed. However, for first-time dunno-how-the-2-feature DVD works, I'd have appreciated BIG RED LETTERS - TURN OVER for 2nd one. But that didn't take too long. I'm now prepared for another double feature DVD.

Both good science fiction movies. Jodi Foster and Matthew Mcconaughey are both excellent in Contact. The book was a bit better in detail, but books usually are. This book was translated to video format keeping true to the theme of the story. It seems like the ending could have been closer to the ending of the book, but I'm sure they had their reasons. Sharon Stone and Dustin Hoffman made a great team in Sphere. I like the idea of time travel, when carried out well and without the usual problems of temporal inconsistencies.

"Cheap but good" 2008-09-04

This is a good pair of niche Sci-Fi movies. I'm not going to review the films in depth, so I suggest you see Sphere and Contact for more detailed coverage.

The case includes a single DVD with Contact on the front and Sphere on the back. There is no labeling on the DVD and the packaging didn't release the DVD very easily so I felt very nervous handling it. Additionally, it was a little difficult to tell which side of the DVD was which because you had to look at small text on the inner ring of the DVD.

From what I could tell, both sides were identical to their standard non-bundled counterparts. You're just getting two on one disc.

These are pretty good movies with a little bit of a cult following (especially Sphere). The only bad thing here is the packaging.

"Cheap. Short-changed...." 2008-07-08

By putting out these two films on one DVD, I can't help but feel that Warner's has "short-changed" Contact by pairing it with such an inferior film like "Sphere." In my opinion, Criterion should have issued their own DVD print of "Contact" with all of the extras. I don't even see it in upcoming Blu-Ray releases and it certainly deserves that kind of upgrade. "Contact" knocked my socks off when I first saw it. The day it came out on LaserDisc, I bought it. The DVD had many extras on it so I got rid of the LD and picked it up on DVD. It's definitely a classic 90's sci-fi film that is NOT getting the kind of treatment (like a release on Blu-Ray) that it so richly deserves. This is a step in the wrong direction...and a slap in the face for fans!!! Forget it!

"MOTHER FIXATION" 2005-02-19

The most compelling aspect of this made for Canadian TV thriller is the adoption angle. William McNamara plays a young man who was given away by his mother at birth and unfortunately has developed a psychosis in seeking revenge on her for abandoning him. We first meet him as a little boy who sets fire to his current set of parents. Next, he's a bright, apparently indisposable executive assistant to stockbroker Donald Sutherland. We know things are a little weird though when McNamara brutally attacks the man whose job he took in the elevator and then makes it look like he is the victim. It soon dawns on us that McNamara has other sordid plans in the offing. We learn that Sutherland's second wife (his first died in a car accident) gave away her first child as she was only seventeen and wasn't ready for motherhood. Put two and two together and you'll see where the film is heading.

Sutherland is a little more animated and upbeat than usual; Lesley Ann Warren is very good as his wife and McNamara's birth mother. Joe Pantoliano and Tia Carrere have supporting roles but aren't sufficient enough to affect the film itself. McNamara chews up the scenery, trying to combine a calm gentlemanly young man with his obvious psychotic outrages. Most of the time it works for him but his inexperience shows in his final scenes, but strangely enough NATURAL ENEMY was a highly competent thriller that kept me involved and intrigued.

This Canadian TVM directed by Douglas Jackson is beautifully lit and features an unusual idea for the serial killer genre. We are told that studies show that violent criminals who have been victims of child abuse are often adopted children, so this thriller takes a huge swipe at the adoption industry by making the protagonist an abused adopted child who wants to direct his violent energies towards his natural mother. Even though this premise indulges in the preposterous assumption that women who give up their babies for adoption do so as an act of selfishness, it still gives the material a queasy fascination, even in spite of a screenplay that's only freshness is in the perverse twists of fate that serial killers always seem to prosper from. Jackson's casting is mixed, with a bearded Donald Sutherland remarkably more animated than usual, but Lesley Ann Warren miscast. Her little girl voice and fine-boned neurosis are more suited to single women in distress or girlfriends at best. Jackson errs greatly in casting William McNamara, since we know him as the Copycat killer, and because McNamara isn't too subtle. Since he plays his murderous intention all the time, we're amazed that the others can possibly begin to trust him, though his obvious line readings actually score an unintentional laugh when he yells "Happy Mother's Day" in a non-celebratory moment.
The treatment has it's share of ridiculous touches. Someone speaks without being aware of a video camera on tripod filming them, a case history is confided to a person the speaker has never met before, there is a gay plot point which is inexplicable, an odd scene where Warren is enclosed in a curtained booth in a hospital room, and a song on the soundtrack "No one ever loved me like you". However Jackson delivers a verbal editing cut from Sutherland speaking to someone in one room then speaking to the same person in another, and we get a nice interior pan of windows leading to Warren in darkness knocking.

Richard Pryor's face is plastered all over the cover of Car Wash, but don't be fooled. This slight comedy, made in 1976, is an ensemble piece much like Robert Altman's or Alan Rudolph's all-star movies in that there are a lot of familiar faces who have relatively little screen time or business to attend to. Set in smoggy Los Angeles, the film opens with a radio announcer's voiceover, "Hey, hey, L.A. It's a brand new day." And the camera pans the street, zooming in on the Dee-Luxe Car Wash, which is owned by the ultimate cheapskate, Mr. B (Sully Boyar). In rapid succession, we're introduced to a dizzying array of characters who all work or hang out at the car wash: drag queen Lindy (Antonio Fargas), brothers Floyd and Lloyd who want to be in show business, a hip brother, an angry brother, a taxi driver (George Carlin), cashier Marsha (Melanie Mayron), and a plethora of "types" who wash, dry, and polish everything in sight while making time to make time. Car Wash doesn't do much or have a lot to say, the laughs aren't particularly original, and the actors don't have much to do save for Fargas, whose role as a drag queen was groundbreaking because the character wasn't discriminated against or killed at the end. Even Richard Pryor is wasted in his single scene as a wealthy preacher named Daddy Rich. Car Wash, which was written by mainstream director Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin, Falling Down, The Client), is ultimately uneventful. Its revival on DVD is puzzling because it looks about as faded, dated, and undistinguished as a rusty old car. --Paula Nechak

I've been a fan of Car Wash since it came out in the theater when I was a teen. It played a 2nd bill with of all things Hitchcocks last flick FAMILY PLOT (horrible!) But Car Wash was just down right funny. I went back many times to see it. They would always promise to finally show it on TV but it never happened till the early 80's--at least in L.A. when they showed it on KTLA I believe. That version they cut almost 45 minutes of the movie out, mostly Antonia Fargas (being Gay was still too much for TV then) part and replaced it with extended scenes of the Hamburger stand next door. In the original movie the stand is cut quite a bit, just barely there which is as it should be, it's about a Car Wash, right? Still it was interesting to see extra footage of Danny DeVito as the hamburger stand owner. The TV version and all later releases cut a few scenes like the end with Melanie's date not being all it's cracked up to be. I don't know why they don't restore the movie to it's original cut and then add the other stuff as fun extras but I don't think they love this movie as much as the fans do. We all need to find a 35 mm print of the original film and get a transfer going so we fans can enjoy the movie as we remember it.

An attractive young woman is driving her car on a dark country road and singing along to the radio. She's running out of gas and so she pulls into a gas station (run by a jittery, stuttering Brad Dourif), but then flees what seems to be an attack, only to find the real threat in her backseat: a hooded killer with an ax who takes her head off with a well-aimed swing. You've heard the story before? Not surprising, given that it's one of the more famous urban legends borrowed for Urban Legend, a post-Scream exercise in self-referential horror. The students at an ivy-covered New England college are turning up dead, the victims of a serial killer who murders in the fashion of the "apocryphal" modern myths. It's all for the benefit of good girl with a dark secret Alicia Witt, the sole witness to most of the killings. Doe-eyed Rebecca Gayheart, as her gullible best friend, and Jared Leto, the ambitious campus journalist who tracks down the secret that hangs over the school, lead a cast of pretty young women, hunky guys, and campus characters, notably the suspicious professor Robert Englund, a genre legend in his own right as the star of seven Nightmare on Elm Street films. Take away the cheeky remarks and self-awareness and it's a throwback to the 1970s' rash of teen slasher movies, where sexually active teens are sliced, diced, and otherwise slaughtered in elaborate and ingenious ways. Say what you will about modern horror and the extremities it goes to in making an audience cringe - at least it's doing SOMETHING right. The watered down horror era of the late 90s/early 00s is over. Whew.

All these movies were good for (Valentine, IKWYDLS, etc.) were jump scares and pretty people getting sliced and diced, even if you didn't really see much of it. It was horror for the NSync and Britney crowd. "OMG, LYKE, DON'T GO IN THERE AND STUFF!"

The more time passes, the more I realize I can't even enjoy these films for cheap nostalgia (class of '99 boeeeeey!). My generation got the shaft with the horror genre. I mostly watched stuff from the 70s and 80s back then anyway. Blockbuster Video was just a few blocks away.

Two stars for the stylish college setting. Beautiful building.

I can't quite agree with all the negative reviews here on amazon for the Last Drop.

The acting was pretty decent by all the characters. Was the story based on a segment that actually happened during World War II? No... at least I don't think it was. I honestly don't know. Maybe it was and the writers exaggerated it.

I WAS having a bit of trouble understanding which army were the Germans and which ones were the British the entire time. They both played a more important role compared to the American soldiers, who only appeared briefly.

For every good, action packed gun-shooting scene, we had to put up with some questionable scenes that were either an indication that the writers didn't know how to make the action scenes look realistic, or didn't know how to make them flow properly. Or maybe the writers were going for a parody of the entire film. It was honestly confusing to me because I'm not sure what the writers intentions were.

No, the Last Drop is not a quality war movie, but the amount of action, fairly decent acting by all the characters, interesting storytelling, and the plot development were good enough to give the film a passing grade. Was it confusing understanding even HALF the things taking place in the film? Oh yeah, definitely. I still like the movie though, and the two women (especially the brunette) were exceptionally HOT!

Unquestionably and without doubt, one of the worst WWII movies ever made. The only good movie Michael Madsen has made in recent memory is KILL BILL. Billy Zane, I don't think, ever personally added anything but poor acting to any movie, including decent movies like ORLANDO, SNIPER, and TITANIC. Cannot understand how producers/directors of movies as bad as this are successful in acquiring funding. A terrible waste of resources. Avoid this one; Turner Classic Movies certainly will!

... and it was awful. However, I enjoyed it for the unintentionally funny, morally flawed and politically incorrect film that it was. It was truly embarrassing for me to see Billy Zane, Michael Madsen, Laurence Fox, Alexander Skarsgard and "Rasputin" involved in such a disaster of epic proportions but my stomach muscles got a great work-out from my frequent, almost seizure-like, bursts of laughter. This film failed on every level - plot, dialog, acting, musical score, and pacing. It's not the worst movie I have ever seen but it could possibly be the worst World War II movie I have ever seen. I'm actually thinking of getting this as a gag gift for my ex-boyfriend who loves this era. As bad as advertised.

I grabbed this off the shelf of my local rental place because I needed a free non-new release in a hurry. I thought it would be horrible so I was actually surprized to find it half decent and worth a rental. It is a little different take on the War genre with a little Kelleys Heroes thrown in. It will never be a classic like that but it was a good movie that doesn't spoon feed you everything up front. And, unlike Tom Cruise in Valkyre, these mostly B movie actors can actually manage convincing accents! Of course, they are not all American actors anyway which helps with the accent thing.

The Last Drop is beautifully filmed-- the lighting, cinematography, and design (the latter especially in the scenes at the German headquarters, a sort of fantasy world of fascist iconography radiating wicked power) are shockingly good-- but inanely scripted and directed.

A triumph of visual design over content (with the exception of the primitive computer generated flying sequences), the people responsible for the actual image deserved a better script, director, score, etc.

I remembered seeing this on cable quite a few years ago and decided to search this movie out and as luck would have it, I found it here on Amazon.com. The first reviewer "A Customer" describes this movie perfectly. Good actors seen in their younger days handling family and life situations that are seemingly real here like Melinda Dillon, Dermot Mulroney, Sean Astin, Daphne Zuniga, Stockard Channing, Dinah Manoff (a fav of mine from "Soap"). The characters are well defined and likable. The script is peppered with comedy, feeling and dialog you didn't usually find in films from the late 80's and early 90's. I don't buy many movies a year let alone older films but this was well worth the money I spent. Unforgettable scene: Sean Astin burying his face in a pantyhosed Dinah Manoff's large bosom while she's trying to change for work. Cheeky devil.

I had heard a lot about this series from my sister. Skeptical, I gave season 1 a shot and found it funny enough to keep going. I'm glad I did. Once I had grown to understand the characters better (about mid-way through season 2), I was hooked. Each season has its best moments, but all of them are based in character and situation -- the perfect blend of comedy. This is not a show for everyone, but if you laugh at shows like The Office or Curb Your Enthusiasm, then you will not be sorry for devoting yourself to the adventures of Julian, Ricky, and one of the best characters ever created: Bubbles.

The Richard Penniman (better known as Little Richard) depicted in this 2000 film was a flamboyant, larger-than-life character, not to mention a vital figure in pop music history--perhaps even "the architect of rock & roll," as he's called here. The fact that both of those portraits are accurate is a tribute to the makers of this TV movie, especially director Robert Townsend (Hollywood Shuffle) and Leon in the title role (Little Richard himself was an executive producer). Sure, it's a bit heavy on the melodrama, especially Richard's volatile relationship with his demanding father, and light on the music ("Tutti Frutti," "Lucille," and Richard's other hits are heard, with Leon lip-syncing to the original recordings, but there's no clue as to how Richard actually forged his style), but hey, that's TV for you. I almost forgot about this Robert Townsend-directed movie until I saw it on television the other night. What I do remember is that it was a made for TV movie that aired in 2000, and I did see it then. Not knowing much about Little Richard's background other than his flamboyant stage act and his classic records, I thought that this was a great introduction to the life of a man whom, in my opinion, never really got the credit he deserved being a pioneer of rock 'n roll. Those honors always seem to go to other acts of the day (Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Pat Boone - please give us a break!), when the REAL pioneers of the genre are mostly ignored or have been reduced to being mere footnotes in rock 'n roll history. Those who are die-hard fans of Richard and his music might find this film to be lacking in many ways, but for those who are just getting familiar with this man's life and his music, this is a good place to begin their research.

Leon is an exceptional actor who seems to portray a lot of musical figures on film, and very well, I might add. Who can forget his dynamic (and probably most well known) performance as the former Temptation David Ruffin in the still popular "The Temptations" mini-series, or as J.T. Matthews in the early 1990's feature film "The Five Heartbeats"? (I've even seen him play Jackie Wilson in another movie mini-series, however, he had a small role in that film.) As Little Richard Penniman, Leon engrosses himself in his subject and although the film is not entirely factual, it piques your interest enough to make you want to seek out the real story of his life. I know, after seeing it yet again, I want to learn more!

My only complaint is that two hours (TV running time, anyway) was hardly enough time to capture the story of this man - this certainly deserved the mini-series treatment. It was like viewing Richard's career and personal life on fast forward - you didn't get the chance to learn whom his main influences were, or understand why he made some of the decisions he did because the film seemed rushed, especially during the last half hour. However, it is an enjoyable movie and definitely worth watching. It needs to be made available again - any fan of rock 'n roll musical bios will want to add this to their collection.

I saw this on cable, and it really was well produced, and although the film doesn't mention that Little Richard's main influence was Esquirita. This film may not be completely accurate, but it is a lot of fun to watch. The birth of jump blues & r&b started with Esquirita, but Little Richard made it a household name.

If we push the limits of the possible, which is a key theme of the movie, who knows what this will unleash in ourselves. An intentionally understated Bruce Willis and overstated Samuel L. Jackson explore the Superman as Everyman theme. Another key theme, is the exploration of good and evil, in terms of means and ends, which is presented in many very interesting scenes. (If a student needs a movie with meat on it, to write a review, this is definitely one to pick). The movie builds to a very suspenseful conclusion, and then to an extraordinary coda. So, don't wander off before the movie is finished. Stay with it, and the movie will definitely stay with you.

Imagine the most realistic Issue #1 comic book movie. A film in the same vein as Batman and Superman but done in a very realistic way. Remember, it still is a comic book movie, just on the surface it doesn't quite seem that way even with this Elijah character constantly referring to comic books and superheroes. My friends, I give you Unbreakable. It is THE best superhero film since 1992's Batman Returns. The film has suspense,mystery,drama, and good old fashioned good vs. evil. It is too bad that this film wasn't nominated at least for it's stellar score. The film and score was underrated in my opinion but now that it is on DVD you shouldn't miss out on this gem!

Hollywood Pictures Home Video held me hostage for ten minutes after inserting The Sixth Sense into my DVD Player. I was unable to fast-forward past the previews and the menu button was disabled. I am really ticked off that, after paying for this movie, the author of this DVD insists on wasting ten minutes of my life every time I watch this movie to force me to watch their movie previews over and over again. Life is too short. If I am forced to watch ten minutes of commercials everytime I play this DVD, then the DVD should have been given to me for free. I paid money to own this video so I can watch it on my own time and at my convenience. I refuse to own any movie which sucks my life away from me, even ten minutes of it. Life is too short. Do not buy this release. (btw - I liked the movie)

This movie has restored my faith in the ability of Hollywood to produce movies that are worth watching. Before I watched this movie, I expected an obvious play on the Sixth Sense motifs and ideas. What I found, to my pleasant surprise, was a well-thought out, well-written movie about an unknowing hero. Bruce Willis gives a good performance alongside Samuel L. Jackson. I found myself enjoying the well-developed storyline along the way, and when I reached the ending, the movie took on a whole new depth as the last piece of information was revealed. I would highly recommend this movie to any fantasy/drama/thriller fan.

I felt this was a big disappointment compared to the first one (Detonator). While the chemistry between Mike Graham (Pierce Brosnan) and Sabrina Carver (Alexandra Paul) is evident, the script was poorly written and I felt that this movie was just thrown in together. It was not a very suspenseful movie, and some of the acting is pretty atrocious, especially by the characters in Hong Kong. The first Detonator was very well-written, well-directed, and well-acted with great actors such as Patrick Stewart, Ted Levine, and Christopher Lee, but I could not believe that the same director was responsible for this sequel. I would definitely stick with the first Detonator.

I brought this video from you. You saved me some money on it.

Here is the Bond man again as Mike Graham.

In this one you see a mutual chemistry between Graham and Sabrina.

He orders vodka martini, straight up with a twist.

This one could have been longer too.

It was unusual seeing Pierce with long hair, but you get the feeling by the opening that he just got back from this mission before they send him off to help Sabrina on a mission, and he just didn't have time for a hair cut and shave.

Anyway, he still looks great to me.

Maybe I was having a little trouble focusing on the plot, but the beginning seemed a bit unrelated to the rest of the show. May have been because this is the first time I've watched one of the Campion episodes. After the real sleuthing started things got better though. Although not on par with other top notch period detective shows (Nero Wolfe takes the cake there for me, Foyle's War is another excellent one) this one was pretty entertaining. The clues are not all presented to the viewer, so your chances of solving the case along with Campion are not too good, but the conclusion made sense. Lugg (his butler?) is very entertaining as his 'assistant' as well. There are better shows out there, but this is not a bad one, I will rent some more :)

1986's much-troubled Heat is pretty much the moment Burt Reynolds stopped being a star. Despite making barely a handful of decent movies, for much of the 70s he was the biggest star in America (but not in the world due to his reluctance to fly abroad to promote his movies), but by the 80s a combination of too many bad choices and too much bad publicity - not least the rumors he was dying of AIDs after his severe weight loss after a jaw injury on City Heat - had him edging closer and closer to the straight-to-video bin. On paper a William Goldman script directed by Robert Altman seemed a good idea. It didn't work out that way. Altman managed to get out of his contract before shooting after vicious arguments with producer Elliot Kastner only for Reynolds and replacement director Dick Richards to come to blows - literally, with Reynolds knocking him unconscious. Not an uncommon event on Richards' sets, allegedly, and such was the director's popularity with the crew that they drew a chalk outline around his unconscious body, but the star hit him a little too hard, damaging his eyesight and leading to costly legal action. The film ended up being completed by Jerry Jameson, no stranger to jumping on sinking ships after taking over Raise the Titanic after Stanley Kramer walked. The film opened first in France several months before a disastrous US release with a happier ending, while overseas distributors Cannon released the film to video. Ever since it's been particularly difficult to find.

It has to be said that it's no great shakes, though by Reynolds' standards it's not bad. The plot's fairly simple: bodyguard and gambling addict Nick Escalante dreams of leaving Las Vegas only to fall foul of the heir apparent to an out-of-town mob when he helps a girl he brutally beat up take her revenge on him. Yet there's a lot less action than you might expect from the synopsis - only three scenes, in fact, and only one where he gets to display his mastery of the improvised Edged Weapons that gave Goldman's source novel its original title. Instead it's generally more of a character piece, with much of the running time devoted to his interaction with software millionaire Peter McNicol, who wants to learn how to be a tough guy and who gradually sees beneath Escalante's armor. There are echoes of his cop from Hustle in Reynolds' character: instead of Paris, he dreams of escaping to Venice but is too far gone with Vegas fever to leave. Even when he wins enough money to leave, he can't resist gambling it all away (it's tempting to think that this is what originally appealed to Altman: the Vegas on show here is a slightly sleazy circle of Hell where winning brings only emptiness but which no-one really wants to leave). It does go some way to stretching his range with an intriguing opening sequence where he displays such a convincingly malicious redneck side to his persona that it's a shame he never really got a proper bad guy role in a decent film, while his first verbal confrontation with the undersized mobster is strikingly well written and performed.

Overall it's hard to make much of an argument for it being a lost or overlooked classic, but it's certainly much more interesting than most of the films that ushered in the straight-to-video era of its star's career. Platinum's Region 1 NTSC DVD offers a decent fullframe transfer of the US version complete with that unconvincing happier ending but no extras.

"Reynolds Vehicle Has Potential, But Fails To Deliver" 2006-11-05

Heat was one of the movies that began the descent to a career that was as successful as any in Hollywood history.

After becoming noticed in Deliverance and cementing his box office appeal in Smokey and The Bandit, Reynolds was one of the biggest movie stars of the 70's and early 80's. But during the early 80's, the box office receipts started dropping, and this film was no exception to that downward trend. Based on a novel written by Oscar-winning screenplay writer William Goldman, Heat had the potential to be a great action movie. The hero played by Reynolds, Nick Escalante, is a Las Vegas private-eye who is down on his luck as far as business is concerned, even though he has been written up in Soldier of Fortune as one of the most dangerous men in the world. Escalante is a former Special Forces soldier who never uses a gun, and whose specialty is edged weapons.

Escalante gets a job bodyguarding a computer-geek millionaire, so it would seem his luck is looking up, except for the fact that he is a wanted man by a young Mafia hoodlum who Escalante beat up as a favor to an ex-girlfriend. Adding to the mix is the fact that Escalante has one serious flaw - he's a compulsive gambler.

Reynolds had a chance to be the action hero and show off some acting chops, but this movie doesn't pull it off. Some of the action sequences are directly very weakly, the script doesn't completely take off, and the result is a huge missed opportunity for a great performance and great reviews. Instead, Heat ends up being one of the yardmarkers that signify the decline of a great moviemaking career.

this is yet one more atempt by burt to lose the "good 'ole boy" image he spent the 70's building up. and once again he just can't get past this problem of finding good scripts. this mess was written by william goldman(magic,all the presidents men),but it just lays there and never takes off.the action is really poor when you know that burt is able to do better.he looks lost and tired in most scenes and a scene early in the movie is really close to home,burt plays a thug so some guy who payed him can look good to a woman by beating burt up,see burt will do anything for money! mmmmmmmm could life and art be one and the same in this turkey? skip it!!!!

"Reynolds at his best" 2004-11-05

I'm not ashamed to tell you that I'm a big fan of Burt Reynolds. I'm also not ashamed to say that his 1986 film "Heat" is my all time favorite Burt Reynolds film. I like this movie better than "The Longest Yard," "Smokey and the Bandit," "Sharkey's Machine," and "Deliverance." Well, maybe I should remove "Deliverance" from consideration since it is more an ensemble piece than a Reynolds's vehicle. But you get the idea. I tend to enjoy his lower budget efforts from the early 1970s more than his "good old boy" stuff that made him so popular a few years later. Don't get me wrong; I thoroughly enjoyed "Smokey and the Bandit" and "Hooper" just as much as the next kid at the time, but they ruined the former with a couple of amazingly lame sequels and never adequately publicized the latter. Then Reynolds sank like a stone in the mid to late 1980s, which meant that when he made "Heat" he was trying to keep his head above water. His resurgence after the success of "Boogie Nights" in the late 1990s still continues to this day. He's supposedly appearing in four or five films opening within the next year.

Reynolds plays Nick Scaliente in "Heat," an aging tough guy who has fallen on hard times in Las Vegas, Nevada. Once considered as an excellent recruit by the local mafia dons, Scaliente's compulsive gambling habits and anti-authoritarian attitude assured that the city's bone crushers would refuse to employ him. At the beginning of the film, we see how far this professional fighter has fallen in his efforts to earn a few bucks. A meek businessman wishing to impress his girlfriend hires Nick to pick a fight in a bar so the guy can "beat him senseless" in the parking lot, thus proving to his woman that he's tough enough to knock down a hulking guy like Scaliente. We later learn that Scaliente is willing to take any work he can find because he fervently wishes to leave Las Vegas forever in favor of a relaxing retirement in Venice, Italy. But life keeps getting in the way. While sitting in his office in a slummy part of Vegas, an office he shares with seedy lawyer Pinchus Zion (Howard Hesseman), a young computer mogul named Cyrus Kinnick (Peter MacNichol) turns up on the doorstep requesting Scaliente's services. Kinnick is a wimpy sort who wants Nick to teach him how to fight like a man, which Scaliente will eventually do in several hilarious scenes involving pushing, slapping, and punching.

In the meantime, Scaliente has a few other serious problems. Holly (Karen Young), a young harridan who happens to live next door to Nick, turns up one day asking for his assistance. The spoiled son of a big East Coast mafia don, Danny DeMarco (Neill Barry), roughed her up with the help of his beefy goons at a casino's hotel. Worse, they refused to pay her for her services. Nick at first refuses to get involved, but eventually comes around because he is at heart a decent fellow who won't let a friend suffer no matter what they do for a living. He goes to the casino posing as Holly's boss and kicks some serious you know what, slashing one guy's throat with a credit card and breaking bones with the greatest of ease. Unfortunately, Nick didn't know exactly whom he was dealing with when Holly asked him to intervene. DeMarco runs to Baby (Joseph Mascolo), the biggest mafia don in the city, and demands that Scaliente die for his intervention. Nick narrowly escapes doom when he proves that DeMarco is lying about the specific details of the violent encounter, but he knows that Danny isn't the sort of guy to forget a wrong. Sure enough, DeMarco guns for Scaliente in a conclusion that sees Reynolds's character using a piece of rebar as a spear, dumping bricks on someone's head, and kicking out an electric light to set a guy on fire. Oh yeah!

"Heat" should have received more attention from filmgoers and critics than it ultimately did. None other than William Goldman wrote the script, and Reynolds gives what is probably his best performance as the problem addled Scaliente. There's a great scene in the film where Nick and Cyrus go to a casino for a little fun at the tables that reveals all too clearly the sort of addiction plaguing Scaliente's life. Reynolds's dialogue with the card dealer Cassie (Diana Scarwid), and her reaction to his failure to win big when he's ahead, is worth watching repeatedly. So is Scaliente's open admission to Cyrus that he does indeed have a gambling problem. Even more to the film's credit is its unflinching portrayal of the flipside of Las Vegas. Most of the film takes place in run down sections of the town, which, if not exactly representative of the entire city, does show that it's not all flashy lights and glitzy hotels.

As much as I liked the film, it does have its problems. First, the scene where Reynolds goes on a rampage in DeMarco's hotel room is extraordinary for its poor editing. Why this action sequence ultimately tanks while the final showdown between Nick and Danny works so well is a mystery for the ages. Second, the plot is hardly original. We've seen a tough guy helping out the weak in a million other films. Third, the DVD version of the film is so poorly put together that it's infuriating. No extras and a fullscreen presentation were enough to make me want to pull my hair out. But in the end none of this matters. It's the performances that elevate this one to memorable status, and "Heat" is memorable for this Reynolds fan. I hope a better DVD comes out soon.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE. I HAVE WATCHED IT OVER AND OVER. I HAVE NEVER LAUGHED SO MUCH IN MY LIFE AT A MOVIE. IF YOU NEED A GOOD PICK ME UP AFTER A VERY TRYING DAY THIS THE MOVIE TO WATCH. This is a hilarious movie, it literally takes you places you didn't think you'd ever go - it is that good. Tom Selleck is even more handsome (if that is possible) without the famous 'tache, I cannot believe how good that man looks even with all the added on medical scaffolding in the movie. One part that had me doubled up was the part in the ambulance where Tom (already well banged up and bruised from various other scrapes) is making sure he has all of his toes, fingers, ears, eyes, & well, you'll just have to watch the movie ... it's a scene that you know he has to get round to counting those particular parts of his anatomy and when he does it's so-o- funny.

Don Ameche is classic as always and so are the rest of this well observed cast, it is really good to enjoy the laughs, spills, humour and mayhem caused by the old parents, the bitchy sister and bratty children. See it please, you must if you value your sense of humour, it is a classic.

If you are a fan of Joan Collins (and who isn't?) - DON'T buy this dreadful rubbish. Joan walked off the picture after refusing to do nude scenes, which were not in her contract, and it was left gathering dust for three years. When Joan became a huge star in Dynasty, the unfinished film (which was shot with the title Growing Pains) was suddenly rushed into cinemas to cash in on her popularity. A body double had been used for the sex scene involving Joan's character (apparently shot on different film stock as it is such an obvious deception). The cinema poster showed a naked Joan - her head superimposed on a nude body. Joan sued, and the poster was reissued showing Joan's head on a bikini-clad body, and after further legal action finally a fully clothed Joan was shown on the poster. As she has such a small role in the film, her name was meant to appear in the credits "and Joan Collins as Sheila's mother", but the advertising people still gave Joan top solo billing on the posters ("Joan Collins as Sheila's mother in Homework" - doesn't really scan, does it?) Respected actress Carrie Snodgress also took action over this film and had her name removed. Homework is utter trash.

I bought this movie for Joan Collins so I was very disappointed that she was in so little of it. Joan is as sexy as ever as Diane, the mother of a very unattractive swimmer but this movie is pretty much all about goofy teenage boys/wannabe rock stars obsessed with "getting laid". There is one sexy scene towards the end between Diane and Tommy. That's pretty much all this movie is good for.

I thought the movie would feature Joan Collins and her male co-star's character as the only storyline and feature in the movie.The sex scene was boring.Most of the story ed on the other teen stars' characters.I've seen Joan Collins in other good movies,but this one is NOT GOOD.

The American teenage male...are they all preoccupied with copulation? The short answer is yes...I remember in my formative years it was all I could do to get through the day without thinking about all the females I wanted to bag, be they classmates, teachers, the lunch lady, the cheerleading squad, my friend's mother (every guy had a friend who had the `hot' mom), the girl at the arcade, etc. I would have forsaken much (including food, water, and even air) to quell the raging hormones that brewed within...Homework, produced and directed by James Beshears, his only film as his later career consists mainly of sound work on films, stars Joan Collins (Empire of the Ants) and Michael Morgan, who mainly appeared in bit parts on television throughout the 70's and early 80's on shows like Hawaii Five-O, Emergency!, and ChiPs, to name a few. Also appearing is Carrie Snodgress (The Attic), Wings Hauser (Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time), and actress turned director Betty Thomas (Hill Street Blues)...don't blink, or you'll miss her role as secretary to a rock star...nice cleavage Betty...

The film begins like your garden-variety teen sex romp, two high school guys smoking a J (that's slang for a doobie, in case you're wondering) in the locker room, sneaking peeks into the girl's locker room, but then sort of veers off into odd, yet interesting directions. We spend a bit of time with Tommy (Morgan), a good-looking, blonde haired high school kid with a serious problem...he's not getting any, especially since his girlfriend (whose mother is played by Collins) is so preoccupied with making the swim team she spends nearly every possible moment in the pool. But this doesn't seem to bother him as much as the perception that everyone else around him is, so much so it's causing his grades to slip, so he visits the school psychiatrist (Snodgrass) and she recommends he channel his energies expended on thinking about what he's not getting into a creative outlet, to which he decides to create a rock band, enlisting a few of his friends and acquaintances from school. From here we sort of wander between various characters, the friend lusting after the new French Teacher, the girl infatuated with the local, ultimately sleazy, rock star (played by Hauser), and so on...eventually Tommy does get the `education' he desires, and from the least likely place (at least to him, but not to us as the advertising for this film tended to focus mainly on the whole younger man/older woman theme, on that obviously involved Ms. Collins).

I was slightly surprised at how this film played out (I'd seen it many years past on cable, but only had vague recollections of it). It's promoted heavily on the physical relationship aspect between Tommy and Diana (his girlfriend's mother), but that is such a short scene near the end (both actors were obviously portrayed by body doubles once the nekkidness begins, as we see neither of the actors' faces during the brief tryst, and the body double for Ms. Collins has a much better body than she did pushing 50, and the body double for Tommy exhibited way to much chest hair). There was plenty of T (not a lot of A) throughout the film, none by Ms. Collins as she was past the point of showing off her body as much as she did in The Stud (1978), or the follow up The B*tch (1979). As the film highlighted on certain characters, we're presented with what's essentially the equivalent of a string of After School Specials (popular in the late 70's and early 80's) vignettes (VD, over protective parents, obsessive/compulsive behavior, trying to find ones' identity) tied together by some rather loose threads. Despite the juvenile aspects present throughout, the writing was somewhat intelligent and tended not to make the characters appear as stupid or hollow as expected from films within the genre, but rather provided a `humanizing', almost realistic quality much like that in a similar film released the same year, The Last American Virgin. The one aspect of this film that annoyed me was the flashbacks by Ms. Collins character, as she tries to recall how it was when she was her daughter's age. These were pretty clunky (especially the retro 50's rock music...couldn't they have popped for a few actual songs from the period?) and tended to disrupt the already choppy flow of the film. The biggest weakness of the film, in my opinion, lies within its' inability to sink its' teeth into any one area, rather glossing over a variety of different topics. If this were a straight up, erotic comedy (as it seems to have been promoted), I would certainly be a lot less critical, but the film tries to be more than that, combining a number of different elements, but rarely linking them together cohesively, or giving them the attention they deserve. Also, the meager payoff certainly wasn't worth the buildup that took place through much of the film, and probably caused many a viewer to feel a little shortchanged. Ultimately, the film isn't as bad as some would make it out to be, but then again it isn't all that great. If you're looking for something a bit juicier, I would recommend My Tutor (1983), Private Lessons (1981), or even Mischief (1985). If you're looking for something more substantial, check out The Last American Virgin (1982).

The widescreen print on this DVD looks decent, but does suffer from very minor signs of aging (the occasion vertical line, white speckling). The audio came across very well and understandable. Special features include an interview with the executive producer Max Rosenberg (he, along with Milton Subotsky, formed Amicus Productions in the early 60's, a chief rival to Hammer Films), along with a trailer for this film, and one each for May Morning (1970), and another for a film called Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx (1970), starring Gene Wilder.

Lewis Milestone was the American cinema's premier maker of war movies for three decades. He won an Academy Award for the single most honored film about World War I, All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), and made one of the most distinctive contemporaneous films of World War II, A Walk in the Sun (1945)--a notable influence on Saving Private Ryan. Still, some of his efforts were rather less than milestones, including The Halls of Montezuma. That still leaves room to accord the picture a marginal recommendation; it's well cast, competently made, and free of "Hollywood" heroics. But the hallmarks of Milestone's style--such as his syncopated tracking shots--were becoming mannerisms, and the screenplay's rhythms of personal crises set against the bigger picture of the military campaign are pretty mechanical.

Richard Widmark stars as a Marine platoon leader who, having brought only seven of his men through Guadalcanal, is determined to see them safely through the next island conquest. The lieutenant was a schoolteacher in civilian life--as we see in flashbacks--and one member of his command is a former student (Richard Hylton) he helped overcome fear. Other platoon members include ex-boxer Jack Palance, trigger-happy bad boy Skip Homeier, hardcase veterans Neville Brand and Bert Freed, and Karl Malden as a philosophical corpsman. "A Fitting Anthem To The Marines Of Their Day" 2009-01-13

I was looking for a rousing film featuring the Marines and found it in "Halls of Montezuma". Richard Widmark gives an unexpectedly balanced performance as the Lieutenant of a platoon making a landing on one of the island chains leading to Japan. In a flashback, Widmark is revealed to have been a former teacher who helped a student overcome a speech impediment to become his class' graduation orator and when that student subsequently joins his command, Widmark helps him overcome shellshock to find the courage to make the landing featured in the film. Widmark's despondency when that soldier is killed in action then becomes all the more poignant.

Instead of projecting pure machismo, Widmark's role allows him to show that intelligence and psychology had much to do with the war effort of the time. Particularly during the scene where Japanes PoW's are interrogated and when Widmark uses the partial results of the interrogation to determine the location of an enemy rocket battery.

There are fine battle scenes as well, both of the ground troops as well as excellent use of real Navy footage of support ships opening fire on the landing zone in an effort to soften it up for the Marines landing.

The shots of widely separated Marines striding through the front also reveals the homage that later films like "Full Metal Jacket" paid to films like "Halls of Montezuma".

I'd recommend this film as a good starter for anyone wishing to begin building their own World War II library.

**** 1950. Directed by Lewis Milestone. WWII, a Pacific island. A company of marines under Richard Widmark's command must find where a Japanese rocket base is hidden. This is a war movie I can recommend without any hesitation. Richard Widmark, Jack Palance in his second role, Karl Malden and Richard Boone give each a very good performance but one must above all praise the mise-en-scene of Lewis Milestone here. Let's admire these travellings of the landings of the Marines or the way Milestone creates the tension by alternating shots of individuals and shots of a company of soldiers. Highly recommended.

...Nowhere, have I set eyes on a better Marine movie than this one...it has so much to offer besides the lethal war scenes...ponder this scene...the Marines leaving the safe sanctuary of those gaping LST doors in their briney wake, even the music puts your in their boots...mulling over in their minds that shortly, this is their last day on earth...[powerful cerebrate moment]...the clanky Amtraks churning up the blue/white sea while racing towards the Line of Departure...all hell is about to blast 'you' out of the water..."Lock-N-Load"...we are crossing the Line of Departure" is shouted out!!!...the US Navy's club-wielding police force is turned loose to do their sworn duty to kill every Japanese Marine on another blood/soaked and palm fringed island...another gem, Widmark telling the Colonel who now wants prisoners, that once you teach Marines to hate and kill the enemy [take no prisoners]...it's almost impossible to reverse an ingrained trait for the lust of killing...the more we kill the longer we remain alive, even when the battle-scarred Marines do capture the enemy as ordered, most want to kill every son of Nippon as expressed by [Pretty Boy and Palance]....a multitude of these Marines have been through so much from Guadalcanal, Tawara, Saipan, Pelilieu, etc...that, they will never survive this endless of endless warfare...Widmark expresses this manic/depressive minsdet very clearly [a very great actor]..in real life Widmark's brother was KIA in the Pacific war...[it preyed on him his whole life]...young Bob Wagner was a Marine reservist in real life...the bellicose Colonel [Richard Boone]was for real, always chewing out non/conformist Sgt Reginald Gardiner for being out of uniform and his outspoken word, but once the rocket base is pinpointed the good Colonel gives Gardnier the OK, and Reggie gets the last word in with, "See, just give the Colonel some time, before he sees it our way"...great punchline!!...star studded cast blends in for a smothering display of Marine camraderie within the enlisted ranks...this Marine movie says alot about the protracted island invasions that dotted the looong road back to Tokyo... and ALL six [6] Marine Divisions FMF gave the Japanese a taste of their own medicine with accrued interest, I kid you naught, indeed..."Give 'em Hell"...."Gung Ho"....SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF

The hate content in war films which had up to this point been reserved mainly for the Germans was now temporarily re-channeled in the direction of the Japanese, and the Pacific War was revived in aggressive patriotism in films like Allan Dwan's "Sands of Iwo Jima," Fritz Lang's "I Shall Return, " Nicolas Ray's "Flying Leathernecks," and Lewis Milestone's "Hall of Montezuma."

The focus of Milestone's film is the capture of a site on which the enemy have set up rocket sites... A Marine patrol is sent out, with orders to take prisoners and bring them back for interrogation...

Much of the movie's appeal arises from its future ensemble cast... There is Richard Widmark, a former schoolteacher who fights the war with his head in a vice; Karl Malden, the medical corpsman who knows what psychological migraine is; Reginald Gardiner, the British-born sergeant, who can speak Japanese; Robert Wagner, the young radio man who kept pestering his fellow soldiers; Skip Homeier, the hotshot 'pretty boy' who is in a hurry to get home; Jack Palance, the protective and grateful boxer who wants his pal as his future manager; Richard Hylton, the student who handled fear once; Richard Boone, the desperate colonel who insists on taking prisoners; Neville Brand, the strong sergeant blinded during a bomb attack; and Bert Freed, the best fighter man but before and after "the no-good money burnin', gin-drinkin' horsehead..."

All the characters solved their hang-ups with bouts of heroism, and Widmark was on hand to lead the last attack with a rousing battle-cry "Give 'em hell!"

In every aspect, the extended-edition DVD of Peter Jackson's epic fantasy The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring blows away the theatrical-version DVD. No one who cares at all about the film should ever need to watch the original version again. Well, maybe the impatient and the squeamish will still prefer the theatrical version, because the extended edition makes a long film 30 minutes longer and there's a bit more violence (though both versions are rated PG-13). But the changes--sometimes whole scenes, sometimes merely a few seconds--make for a richer film. There's more of the spirit of J.R.R. Tolkien, embodied in more songs and a longer opening focusing on Hobbiton. There's more character development, and more background into what is to come in the two subsequent films, such as Galadriel's gifts to the Fellowship and Aragorn's burden of lineage. And some additions make more sense to the plot, or are merely worth seeing, such as the wood elves leaving Middle-earth or the view of Caras Galadhon (but sorry, there's still no Tom Bombadil). Extremely useful are the chapter menus that indicate which scenes are new or extended.

Of the four commentary tracks, the ones with the greatest general appeal are the one by Jackson and cowriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, and the one by 10 cast members, but the more technically oriented commentaries by the creative and production staff are also worth hearing. The bonus features (encompassing two complete DVDs) are far superior to the largely promotional materials included on the theatrical release, delving into such matters as script development, casting, and visual effects. The only drawback is that the film is now spread over two discs, with a somewhat abrupt break following the council at Rivendell, due to the storage capacity required for the longer running time, the added DTS ES 6.1 audio, and the commentary tracks. But that's a minor inconvenience. Whether in this four-disc set or in the collector's gift set (which adds Argonath bookends and a DVD of National Geographic Beyond the Movie: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring), the extended-edition DVD is the Fellowship DVD to rule them all. --David Horiuchi

The Lord of the Rings movies have the perfect combination of emotional acting, fantastical scenery, and thrilling plot twists. Peter Jackson and his team did a superb job and deserved every single Oscar they got. The movies are a wonderful tribute to the books. Fortunately, they've been made so well that they can be enjoyed by all, from the Tolkien aficionado to kids who haven't yet read the books.

Fellowship of the Rings has always been my favorite of the movies. I love how it dwells in the history of Middle Earth. The color filters used to set the moods are techniques still underutilized by cinema. My only recommendation is to get the extended edition - it includes over 40 minutes of new footage - rather than this theatrical release.

As a life-long fan of Tolkien's work, I am not exactly unbiased. However, this is a review of the Jackson film, so...

The film is not perfect. I am not a big fan of the changes Jackson made in the story -- the sub-plot with Elrond and Arwen that was not in the book and the absence of the Scourging of the Shire story. Nevertheless, overall the movie captures the essence of Tolkien's tale with brilliance. Jackson's settings, costumes, cinematography, the acting, casting, directing, all were exquisite, to me. Most old-time Tolkien fans I know have long held mental images of how they thought the story might look visually. Nearly every one of these whom I have asked agree that the Jackson film matches their images nearly perfectly. We got the movie we wanted and then some. After many fits and starts over the decades, Tolkien's genius is finally done justice on film.

Can't wait for The Hobbit.

Although I loved the theatrical versions of LOTR, so much needed to be left out, even to fit into 3 three hour movies.. The extended versions are closer to the vision. Characters beyond Frodo and Sam are fleshed out more. We also get a greater sense of the duration and duration of Frodo's quest. Great addition to the library.

Ever since I was a kid, I have loved this movie. Everybody does an awesome job and the movie has a great storyline with awesome comedy and famous quotes. Chase plays Clark Griswold, a man who is going to take his family to Walley World, no matter what happens. They run into a lot of trouble, deals with his aunt, visit his redneck cousin, stay at crappy hotels and much more! I highly recommend that you take a VACATION!!!

One of my favorite old time movies. Chevy Chase is a sometimes oblivious but loving father taking his family on a vacation to a theme park in California. National Lampoon's Vacation is one wild incredible movie. It is an insane mixture of side-splitting humor and unnerving adventure. Chevy Chase plays the part of the con-man father. Other actors include Beverly D'Angelo, Randy Quaid, Dana Barron, Micahel Hall, John Candy, Imogene Coca, and Christie Brinkley.

There is one ridiculous scene after another as the family travels down the road to their vacation destination: the girl stirring the punch with her hand, the hamburgers with no meat, the biting dog, Aunt Edna in her hair rollers, the disaster in the desert, the dip in the pool. The fun goes on and on. Then there is the grande finale.

This movie made millions. It's classic comedy -- a real hoot. Don't miss it.

"One wild and crazy vacation that is well worth taking..." 2008-09-26

As one would gather from my review of `Caddy Shack', there is just some humor that, while achieving much praise and cult status, I just don't really get. You'd expect that since I was not a huge fan of `Caddy Shack' that I also would find `National Lampoons Vacation' to be a bit of an overpraised comedy, but what you fail to realize is that Chevy Chase was my favorite thing about `Caddy Shack' and when you strip away everything I didn't really like about the golfing spectacle you are left with `Vacation', a film that I can very much enjoy.

The film tells the story of the Griswold family as they attempt to travel cross-country to visit the amusement park Wally World. Along the way they meet with many obstacles that strain their relationships and prevent them from attaining their end goal, of having fun. They meet up with oddball relatives who hit them up for money. They get stuck transporting a crotchety old woman to another relative's home. They break down, break up, fight, make up, get lost, endanger their lives and pretty much fall into every type of hazardous condition imaginable and yet nothing compares to what happens when they actually make it to their destination!

All of this is propelled by the hilarious performances by the cast, Chevy Chase in particular. As the everyman Clark Griswold, Chase develops a comical version of ourselves and this is a joy to watch. As he races up alongside the babe in the convertible, giving her the eye while his wife is asleep we can see what is running through his mind. Does he want to cheat? No. Does he like the idea of having the opportunity? Of course he does. Beverly D'Angelo is also wonderful as Ellen. She is the right sort of counterbalance to Chase's breed of humor and she helps ground the film and makes it more relatable. Imogene Coca is hysterical as the crazy Aunt Edna and Randy Quaid as a memorable cameo as bumpkin Cousin Eddie.

The antics that happen are outrageous and at times even ridiculous (Aunt Edna on the hood of the car = laugh riot), but it never feels that extreme because we are so wrapped up in that `this could really happen' phase. We see so much of our own family within the Griswold clan that everything they experience feels that much more believable.

Well, some may find it baffling that I enjoy this film so thoroughly yet found much to dislike in `Caddy Shack'. What can I say; they are too very different movies that leave me feeling very differently. The acting here is much more consistent in my opinion, as are the jokes and gags. I found myself laughing out loud here as apposed to concealing a halfhearted chuckle. I have not seen the other `Vacation' films, and I hear that they are not as good, but I'm definitely going to check them out because this one is a real keeper.

"Jiggle It!" 2008-08-20

I am probably not the best reviewer for this film inasmuch as I am an airline pilot. Since my time is somewhat limited I won't even cover the technical inaccuracies in this film (it would be much quicker to list the accuracies, anyway), but will stick to more purely cinematic issues. This slab of back bacon-flavored cheese was made in Canada for TV and stars a veritable pantheon of B-movie actors, with Kate Jackson taking the helm as the lead flight attendant.

I was originally going to give this film only one star, but decided on awarding a bonus "cliche star" due to it having every hackneyed plot device known to man somewhere within its bowels. The basic premise is this: a 747 takes off from New York with 16 hours of fuel onboard bound for London. In the first 30 seconds or so of flight the plane is hit by lightning right in the cockpit, frying all the pilots. Despite the maze of wires being fried the autopilot continues flying the aircraft, although to ever-changing, random cities. Almost immediately Flight Attendant Maureen McCormick reveals she's pregnant, while another Flight Attendant, Charlene, commences having a nervous breakdown; meanwhile the obligatory pregnant passenger goes into labor. Hunky passenger-hero Ed Marinaro (as "Brett Young") endears himself to Kate, while action hero actor (and full time jerk) Erik Estrada has a conniption. Kate appeals to Erik, naturally, to calm the passengers on the PA (because "you're their hero"), but he blows it spectacularly, resulting in the first in a series of mutinies led by a doughy middle manager in a pink shirt.

Meanwhile, the CEO of the airline arrives at Air Traffic Control, where chief Robert Guillaume and an annoying FAA inspector are holding court. In one of the more realistic lines of dialogue in the film the CEO says "You're going to have to explain this to me; I'm more used to steel mills." The FAA woman is threatening to have the plane shot down as it's a hazard to populated regions.

In the plane Kate, Ed, and a computer geek hack into the aircraft Flight Management Computer with a cheap laptop. (I know I said I'd refrain, but I can't help myself: this is the single stupidest and least technically accurate scene I have ever seen in the legions of bad airplane movies I have witnessed.) The airplane intermittently makes horrible lurching sensations related to electrical arcing in a wire bundle under the glareshield. Their solution? They jiggle it repeatedly until the plane does what they want it to. I am not making this up.

To contact Air Traffic Control they want to use a cell phone, but none of the 400 people onboard have one. Computer geek has one, but it's in the cargo hold. Unfortunately, due to the aerobatic flight, a Corvette in the hold has rolled into a pet porter, and freed a rottweiler. Kate and Ed go spelunking through the baggage only to be viciously attacked by the dog. How can they be saved? Through a combination of good and bad luck: the plane starts climbing out of control so high (52,000 feet is mentioned...) that the dog gets hypoxia and passes out! They actually administer oxygen to the dog to revive him. (Please ponder this.) Unfortunately, a little girl turns the Inflight Entertainment system on to show all the passengers the television: all that's featured (of course) is how they will all die horrible deaths. In what is by far the most realistic part of the film, members of the press are seen endlessly badgering family members for their reactions to the impending deaths of their loved ones. (If you think the principals can't act, wait until you get a look at the family members.)

The male Flight Attendant goes down the lift (elevator) to the lower galley, but it becomes suddenly jammed at the same time a mysterious fire breaks out in the galley. Since that didn't seem like enough for the cast to cope with, the backstory then clues us in that Ed is actually a fugitive spy wanted for treason! This is all too much for the guy in the pink shirt who tries to commandeer the flight with a bold charge and the battle cry "We're taking control of this flight!" (I was wondering what they wanted to do with it after they were in control.) After the uprising is quelled by Ed, we learn that Ed's company framed him for treason, but that storyline can't linger long because the airplane is now headed for Chicago; it later terrorizes Denver as well. The FAA woman said they would have to shoot it down if it got too close to populated areas; I don't even need to ask the obvious question here, do I?

The Corvette starts leaking gasoline onto the cargo hold floor and it spontaneously bursts into flame, in the second unrelated inflight fire in an hour. This lets Kate know that it's really time to get down to business, so she enlists Erik (again) to calm the seething masses (OK, the 20 or so extras on the set...) which he does by quoting lines from his films, while the plane heads itself to Vancouver. There is much jiggling of the cockpit wires during the trip to Vancouver, but unfortunately the plane runs out of fuel and has to glide, on fire, to the airport. The fire trucks respond by parking on the runway, which seems an obvious place to avoid if an out of control, flaming 747 is going to try to land on that runway. It turns out that the landing is ugly and destroys most of the Crash, Fire, and Rescue equipment in Canada in what may be the worst computer generated airplane scene in any movie ever.

Everyone evacuates the plane safely (except for the pilots, of course): Erik falls in love with his personal assistant, to whom he says "If you help me get back into the habit of saying please and thank you, I'll buy you a cat." Of course Kate and traitor-hero Ed make a date in London, as they are also romance bound. The FBI approaches the plane and asks Kate where Ed is at: she says that he was killed by lightning, while Ed walks into the sunset (really) with his briefcase full of secrets. The FBI surely won't figure that one out.

This movie is just awful on every level. If you know anything about flying it requires total suspension of disbelief, and if you have a low threshold for bad cinema, this is not for you. For fans of ultra (and I mean ultra) low quality made-for-TV drama that's so bad it hurts, this is a dream come true.

"One of the funniest aviation movies ever made" 2007-09-29

I love this movie. It's totally incorrect from a technical point of view and that's is the fun part.

Fun goofs: the aircraft changes color scheme during flight and it also swaps from Boeing 747-200 to 747-300. The cabin is a hybrid between a DC-10 and a Boeing 747. The flightdeck seems identical to an MD-11.

There is a popping cable who is capable to change altitude and speed.

The Flight Management Computer is fully compatible with a normal PC and seems to run Windows.

New York ATC is a very small facility with the ability to track an aircraft over the whole american continent. Wow!

Transponder data is simple: RAI-115 H. No altitude, no speed, no heading....

Vancouver is a very small town with a very small airport according to this movie.

The aircraft can climb way over it's maximum altitude and the oxygen supply lasts very long.

I use this movie for pure entertainment! If you want an aviation movie with "realism", I can recommend Airport (the original), Miracle Landing etc instead.

Panic in the Skies is a comptetitor to the "Airplane!" and "Airplane! 2 The Sequel" in my movie collection.

I enjoyed this movie with the people being trapped on the Air Plane.

It was very frighting for the people espesecially when the two pilots were killed by the thunder and lightning. The cockpit was a right mess with wires everywhere and it was amazing that the plane could still fly.

They had to get a man's laptop to hook it up to the planes computer in the cockpit.

I give the film 5 stars!

This was, quite possibly, the worst movie I have ever seen in my life. It was so awful that me and my girlfriend were cracking up and truly enjoying ourselves. The dialogue is so bad and the plot is usually very predictable.

I just loved this film because it was so bad. It could easily be a film shown on "Mystery Science Theatre". I highly recommend this film to anyone who likes B movies.

Definitely not a great film, but a fun one. A TV version of one of the Airport/Plane disaster flicks. Jackson is the head stewardess and surrogate mom and a lot of B-grade 70's and 80's actors make up the rest of the cast. Erik Estrada, Maureen McCormick, Ed Marinaro ... anyway a storm blows up and kills the cockpit folk, so it's up to Kate and Company to save the plane and passngers. They have altitude and oxygen problems, gally fires, stray vicious dogs, rolling leaking cars and criminals all on the loose. BUT - it is definitely entertaining and rewatchable. Silly, yes, thrilling, at times, and so over the top. You almost can't help yourself in getting caught up in all the drama. A fun TV flick.

All the same, it is worth viewing on its own merits, and for supporting performances by future stars Anthony Hopkins and Anjelica Huston.

Nicol Williamson is a very fine actor, who does not seem to have realised his full potential. Nevertheless, all his performances deserve attention, as he is able to bring charisma and intelligence to anything he undertakes. All interpretations of Shakespeare's major works also deserve concentration and serious notice, since they are central to the Western canon of drama and literature, and Hamlet, especially, is the most remarkable of all his plays. It is not really sensible to enact the full script unaltered and uncut, and it seems doubtful whether it was ever produced on the Elizabethan stage in this manner, without trimming. What is essential, however, is that nothing but the words should drive the action, which is why Ethan Hawke's Hamlet and McKellen's Richard III are such relative disasters. At the same time, the director must have a unity of vision, and his take on the text must be coherent and consistent. Neither Richardson nor Williamson quite achieve this. The production suffers from ups and downs, and the various parts of the text that have been retained do not seem to integrate fully with each other. Richardson also appears to have been negatively influenced by Olivier's film, and sometimes seems to be going out of his way to avoid repetition of Olivier's reading. This is not a constructive approach, and one is left with a sense of dissatisfaction. There are other small gripes: why are the parts of the grave-digger and the player king both performed by Roger Livesey? This is extremely disconcerting. Marianne Faithfull was good, if not convincingly virginal.

In the final quarter or so of Bobby, writer-director-actor Emilio Estevez finally starts tightening his grip on the viewer as we head inexorably toward the film's climax: the 1968 assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in a Los Angeles hotel kitchen. In the course of these scenes--among them Kennedy's acceptance speech after winning the California Democratic presidential primary (the senator is seen only in file footage), his death at the hands of gunman Sirhan Sirhan, and the chaos and despair that ensued--Estevez steadily ratchets up the sense of tension and dread. Knowing exactly what's coming, while the characters onscreen don't, is excruciating, as is our grief at hearing RFK's own words, so eloquent, so hopeful and inspiring, as we watch the horrible events unfold and wonder what might have been (sure it's manipulative--but it works). But the rest of Bobby isn't nearly as compelling. Nor is it really about Kennedy, despite its obvious adulation of the man whom many thought would defeat Richard Nixon in the '68 general election. In the tradition of, say, an Irwin Allen disaster flick, we're invited into the lives of nearly two dozen folks, most of them at least partly fictional, who were at the Ambassador Hotel that June day, including guests, staff (kitchen workers, switchboard operators, management, etc.), campaign workers, reporters, and more. There are lots of movie stars in the cast, and some of them (Sharon Stone, Helen Hunt, William H. Macy) are very good. But caring about the quotidian minutiae of these people's existences is a chore, and Estevez crams so many issues into his story (the Vietnam war, drugs, alcoholism, voting irregularities, adultery, racism, immigration, communism… even L.A. Dodgers pitcher Don Drysdale's streak of consecutive shutouts) and tries so obviously to establish parallels between then and now that too much of the movie feels gratuitous and forced. A warts-and-all film about Robert Kennedy's extraordinary life and career would be welcome. Unfortunately, Bobby isn't it. --Sam Graham

I remember Bobby Kennedy's assassination as if it happened yesterday, and was awed by how bad a movie this turned out to be. Comprised of an unrelated series of nonsensical stories, the movie failed miserably at depicting the true look and feel of the late sixties. Even its all-star cast failed to give this production an inkling of credibility. At best it was like watching a high school level play, with costumes straight out of a box labeled "the hippie years," and phony dialogue that made me cringe. The only redeeming features of this badly produced and poorly written film were the actual footage of the era, and the beautiful and poignant speeches of Bobby Kennedy. This production was a dud to the tenth power.

"Incorrect Focus Cheapens Noble Intention" 2007-12-01

Prior to watching Bobby, I knew that the movie was about a group of people that were present when Robert (Bobby) Kennedy was assassinated. Thus, I thought the movie would be a portrayal of how Kennedy's death affected their lives. Instead, the movie was a (somewhat) fictionalized depiction of how these people spent the day of Kennedy's assassination, ending with the assassination itself. Consequently, my reaction to the movie was one of confusion and disappointment.

I wouldn't have had the reaction that I did had two elements in the movie been different. First, Emilio Estevez inserted actual newsreel footage and recordings of Kennedy's speeches throughout the movie. These insertions leave the viewer with the thought that Kennedy's words made an impression on people. Thus, it is confusing why Estevez would take the time to include these words when he doesn't show the impact of them. This flaw directly influences the other item of weakness in the movie: the characters themselves. By presenting such a large group of characters (both campaign staff and those not associated with the campaign), Estevez seems to imply that Kennedy was affecting a broad spectrum of society. However, by implying and not completing that connection, the viewer is left wondering why these people's stories are important to follow. The fact that the movie ends without continuing the cast's stories just heightens that puzzlement.

Kennedy's campaign to bring more dignity and economic parity to the poorest members of our society earned him admiration. It's clear that Estevez shared that admiration and wanted to depict it through the movie's characters. However, by not showing how Kennedy's campaign, words, and especially his death inspired people to change, the viewer is left wondering what all the fuss is about. As a result, Bobby has to be seen as a disappointing attempt to portray the influence that one person and his death had on American society.

I couldn't watch this movie more than 30 minutes. I expected something totally different given the all star cast and glowing reviews on the case. The acting was horrible. It was like the actors decided, "I am going to play this this way" and had no regard for being part of a cast. The dialog was horrible. The actors had no relationship to one another (even in the same scene). But the worst part of it all was the hard to miss propoganda. I didn't want a social commentary on what is going on today. I don't want politics shoved down my throat. If I wanted to be part of a liberal dialog, I would listen to talk radio. I wanted to be entertained and this film failed miserably in doing that for so many reasons.

The second short season of Dante's Cove presents us with a better storyline and worse dialogues. Episodes have grown to five and the season is concluded by as high -and lame- a cliffhanger as that at the end of "season" one.

We have already been introduced to the characters and we find ourselves in the middle of action now, which is always fine with me. Problem is that the script sounds for a good 80% of the time completely idiotic. Short, disjointed sentences are conveying little meaning, no information about the character who speaks them who by the way generally sounds like a complete moron.

The setting has been changed too and, while the beaches are just as beautiful, the new hotel Dante is much less impressive than the old one even if it is much larger and allows more room for interaction.

Acting is just as plain as it was in season one with the possible exception of Thea Gill and Jon Fleming (this taking the role of Adam) who are up to the not much required by the script.

There are several glossy sex scenes, all of them homosexual, most of them involving the male characters. They add nothing to the thrill, to the storyline, to the overall tension and interest if not the pleasing view of the finely groomed bodies of Jon Fleming and some of the others.

I hadn't heard too much about this show when I got this DVD. Suffice to say, I wasn't expecting much, but I liked it anyway. The dialogue and special effects needed some punching up, but the copious eye candy made up for any deficiencies in the acting (in my opinion, anyway). And why does each season of this series only do single-digit episode counts? They need more material than that. Anyway, I was thrilled to see that Tracy Scoggins has been keeping busy since her stint on Babylon 5, and I hope that this show lasts a while. She seems like she's having a lot of fun playing Grace. I know we haven't seen the last of this show, and that things can only get better from here.

Wow! The first sesason took off kinda slow. I think the writers didnt quite know where to take it, but the second season was amazing. A rareity to find such a fun frisy series that redifines witchcraft. Loved it! it was funny, scary, thrilling, mysterious, sexy, and enthralling all mixed into the second season. Cant wait for the 3rd season... and boy are the men sexy!!

This is a great show if you get past the bad actors. It has great pleasure scenes and has a good solid storyline, It also has a bit of fun in it with the supernatural side to it, and it has a bit of romance thrown in as well. This is very much a winding down guilty pleasure at bed time type show which to be honest have you ever even heard off. This is def worth the buy and its worth the price.

First, I want to mention this is a stunner in Hi-Def, richly colored, finely detailed and the night scenes are full of inky blacks and blues.

The main reason I want to write a review for this movie is because I think alot of people look at the cover and make the assumption that the story is sexist, and it'd probably be a fair guess, but it really isn't at all. It's a uniquely honest fable about redemption and facing our flaws.

Lazarus (Samuel Jackson) is a farmer and former blues guitarist trying to deal with his own demons, stemming from his failed marriage to a younger woman who leaves him for his younger brother.. Rae is a girl with crippling self-esteem problems, she loves her boyfriend fiercely, but when he leaves for a tour in Iraq, she lets herself be passed from man to man. Lazarus finds her one morning, comatose from drugs and being beaten by her boyfriend's best 'friend' on the side of the road, and realizes that if he can help her clean up her act, he may be able to save himself.

In the hands of any other director, with any other actors or actresses, this film probably would have been a complete disaster... yet somehow it ends up being one of the most emotionally honest movies I've ever seen. Neither corny nor overly sentimental. I highly recommend.

Atomic Train hauls along every disaster-flick formula you can think of: an estranged couple bonding again during a time of crisis (you begin to miss the hysterical Harvey Fierstein character of Independence Day); urban rioting and mayhem; government officials wearing headsets and breathlessly watching video monitors; trigger-happy military men; high-speed stunts; escapes by helicopter; clean-up crews in white spacesuits; many scenes of families being reunited after subplot cliffhangers, to major-key crescendos on the soundtrack. The only typical element missing is a dog saved from a fire at the last minute. But, you have to admit, what Atomic Train does it does with pizzazz.

Everyone's a hero in this movie and almost everyone faces great danger, including Esai Morales, an estranged husband and father; Kristin Davis, the ex-wife with child he's competing with Lowe for; and Zack Ward, the assistant train engineer. It's interesting to see what Ward looks like and what he's doing so many years after playing the yellow-eyed bully in A Christmas Story (hint: a strikingly handsome decent actor). "How Many Directors Does It Take to Mess Up a Train Movie?" 2005-06-27

I was surprised to see Rob Lowe in this movie. Of course, Rob is one of the few good things in this movie that is yet another entry into the disaster genre. Unfortunately, there are so many problems with this movie's plot that the producer should have fired the technical advisor or the director that failed to listen to him.

There is this train traveling through the Rocky Mountains with a Russian nuclear missile secreted on board. In addition to the nuclear missile are all kinds of hazardous waste, including metallic sodium, which essentially explodes on contact with water. So, the train is rolling down hill for hundreds of miles into Denver with an air line on the train fails. Wait. That can not be right.

Let us check the facts. Once you get just a little way west of Denver, you are on the other side of the Front Range and the slope goes down again. Then how did the train go rolling for hundreds of miles into Denver? I have no answer for that question. Then there is an even more interesting question, which is why the train brakes failed to work when the air hose broke. The air pressure in the hoses deactivates the brakes, not the other way around. That way train cars will stop automatically when air lines open. Then there is the caboose. Cabooses have not been used in some time, except on rare occasions. Maybe the whole train was hazardous. It certainly seemed to be a couple of centuries behind the times.

If you can avoid the problems with this film, which are numerous, you find that this movie is much ado about nothing. It is a bit more difficult getting a nuclear missile onto a train than you might think. Even Soviet nuclear weapons do not explode easily, and Soviet weapons are notorious for being unreliable; i.e., they often do not work.

I found the whole premise of this movie implausible. Now, had someone tried to dismantle the bomb to get the nuclear material, or had someone set the air to be on constantly, and put a tool box on the accelerator, and arranged for the metallic sodium to crash into a train loaded with Perrier, then there might have been a plot. Instead, I was so caught up in the errors that I really had a hard time gaining any sympathy for any of the characters and what happened to them. I found it difficult to feel badly for the people who died, because at least they did not have to be there for the end of this turkey.

My dad once told me, "son, a movie isn't a movie if someone doesn't get injured and/or killed by an owl." Last month I realized how incredibly true that is. I also realized my dad never said that.

The film industry was done a freaking favor when director (genius) David jackson took over the reigns on this thoroughbread of a movie. Certain words come to mind after watching a film of this calliber. Most of these words I cannot type, for children may view this, but here are a few: "what?" "huh?" and "why!?"

After watching Atomic Train my best friend jumped out of the window of our hotel after saying only, "I have seen all there is to see!" He was right. Not a day goes by that I kick myself for not jumping out of that window as well.

But in all seriousness that owl was David Bowie from The Labirynth right?

Watching this movie, was like....well, it was like watching a train wreck. I couldnt stop watching it despite how painfully bad the whole movie was. You can read some of the other reviews for some of the endless flaws in the plot line. Anyways, my point is this: don't buy this movie. You'll just end up wasting two hours of your life.

By the end of The Streets of San Francisco's sophomore season, the relationship between veteran cop Mike Stone (Karl Malden) and hotshot rookie Steve Keller (Michael Douglas) has deepened, with none of the generational tension that underscored Season One. They are partners and genuine friends (Stone still calls Keller "buddy boy," and Keller needles Mike about only reading the sports pages), but Stone still has much to teach him. In the episode, "Rampage," Keller discovers that a former Berkley classmate might by one of a group of neighborhood vigilantes. He may have mellowed towards Keller, but he's still the old hardnosed Mike Stone while questioning suspects. In "Death and the Favored Few," he stands up to a socially connected blue blood who knows more than she's telling about a sleazy, scandal sheet publisher's murder. In "A String of Puppets" (one of two episodes directed by Richard Donner), Stone suspects that the best parole officer in the whole department is the ringleader of a gang of thieves. Streets of San Francisco was the best cop show ever on television. The dvds are of very good quality, both visually and the soundtrack. I was a fan of the orginal show, so it is most delightful to see the programs again.

If you are a fan of police shows, get this one! It is the best.

My wife and I love the location filming in and around San Francisco.

I too am a fan of the Streets of San Francisco, my favorite city, and I know that there are some older epidodes of this series in black and white. I have the first and second seasons in color, but would love to get those older ones in black and white too, before Michael Douglas came into the picture. Not that I don't like him, I just would like to see the older episodes as well. I remember seeing them on TV. I like that special quality that black and white films have.

In THE COUCH TRIP, a con-artist imprisoned at a Chicago psychiatric facility flim-flams his way out of jail, onto a radio talk show and into a small fortune.

Career felon John Burns (Aykroyd) has avoided "hard time" by feigning mental illness. The easy ride will soon be over though, for Dr. Lawrence Baird (Clennon) plans to certify Burns as sane and ship him back to the "pen." In Baird's absence, Burns takes a phone call in the shrink's office. It's from George Maitlin, a successful Beverly Hills psychiatrist and talk show host. Maitlin, who's much in need of a sabbatical, offers a man he believes to be Baird an opportunity to sub for him on the radio show, handle his practice for a few months and earn a large sum of cash.

Burns orchestrates an escape from the looney bin. Disguised as Dr. Baird, he heads to California where he immediately encounters Donald Becker (Matthau), a fellow con artist pretending to be a street preacher. Becker easily "reads" Burns and he blackmails his way into the sweet deal. Meanwhile, Drs. Maitlin and Baird accidentally meet at a European psychiatric seminar. Together, they fly home to find out who has usurped Baird's identity and taken (under false pretenses) Maitlin's $200,000.

Charles Grodin co-stars in the charming fantasy HEART AND SOULS (1993) as one of four guardian angels. They've been cosmically attached to young businessman Thomas (Robert Downey Jr.) ever since his 1959 birth and their simultaneous deaths in a bus crash. Thomas is the key to their escape from Earth, so his angels make themselves visible to him.

This is a funny movie that had me chuckling along with it most of the way. Walter Matheau seemed a little superfluous until the end of the movie however (hard to believe as a crazy man). Grodin was dry, wry and hilarious - until he went over the top in the end. And Dan Akroyd did a great job. One of his best I'd have to say. A fun little movie that entertains.

Was never a fan of Sat. Night Live & never followed Dan A.'s career, etc., but here, in this comedy flick, the guy is just about perfect in the role and as hilarious as they come. What I love about his take on the part is that he plays it straight, poker-faced all the way--and never, ever DELIBERATELY goes for laughs--and it had me in stitches the entire time.

Re: supporting cast: from the gorgeous Donna Dixon to the always solid Walter Mathau (and everyone else in this terrific comedy) give Mr. Aykroyd the support he needs.

It's an eighties gem, so overlooked and STILL FUNNY. I have been waiting for this DVD for years now (along with "Club Paradise" and "Ice Pirates" -still waiting 08/04).

It is hysterical in some parts, and it will stand the test of time. Admittedly, I loved this movie when I saw it (in the 80's), and am still biased. But there are at least 10 belly laugh scenes, all priceless and unique. Tons of things that Akroyd never did "in every other 80's flick" as one reviewer suggested. And yes, it is not a slickly, year 2000+ produced movie that will entrance you for every moment, there is a slow scene or two, but still so worth a viewing. If you missed it then, now's your chance. I put my personal garauntee that you will laugh at least five times really hard (unless you are under age 18). Enjoy

Okay, this is the type of movie you take with a grain of salt. If you like low budget movies that are corny, bad effects, and are generally laughable then you might enjoy Carver's Gate. The movie mixes videogame aspects with a post-future world where people plug into the game in hopes of reaching The Heaven level where they can transend. Along the way there is a murder involving the creator of the game, an investigation, and a rift between the videogame world and the real world that sends creatures from the game into reality. The acting is very bad but at the same time justified with the campy plot. Some of the scenes are soo funny and badly done that you have to run it back to catch what you missed because it was so lame. I personally liked this movie alot, but then again I thought BattleQueen 2020 was classic. This is a movie that many will not like nor will they even care to watch it. Is my life better now that I've seen it? No. But it did make me laugh and it did entertain me throughout, and as a whole I would reccomend it to those that like the farfetched and lame Sci-Fi.

"Carver's Gate. Film forsees Bleak Future with Cool Twists" 2000-12-12

Carver's Gate is a low budget (2 million$) sci-fi adventure and the producers must have put every cent on the screen. This film came out before a lot of the Virtual Reality adventure films, and the good thing abot that is that before the cliches were set by Hollywood some thought and fun inteligence went into this production.

I don't want to give it all away, but I paid attention when an early low-budgeter like "Carvers Gate" deals with levels of VR and subtle systems breakdown. The sets are spectacular in a futuristically Stalanistic kind of way. The acting is uneven, but not bad for this budget range and Michael Pare is excellent, so is his (unknown) female co-star Maria Manuel. The producer team seems to be Jackson and Dor again, who always seem to do something interesting for the money. Pay attention to the detail -some lovely satire (In one scene a Virtual Game boasts of the entertainment promissed in "sex world" with the line "Remember she's not real, so she has no rights!" It's just a little more dangerous and zingy than your typical low budget sci-fi fair.

Among the most memorable incarnations were George Sanders (in a series of 1930s films) and Vincent Price (who voiced the character on radio in the 1940s). But for baby boomers, there is only one Simon: Roger Moore, who starred in this classic 1960s British TV series. Moore makes a better Templar than he did a Bond (and he is certainly better than Val Kilmer, who stared in the 1997 feature film). This eagerly awaited boxed set contains three entertaining episodes, beginning with the gem "The Queen's Ransom," which launched the series' 1966 season and was the first episode in color. "The infamous Simon Templar" (who is also called "arrogant, smug, self-important, and impertinent") teaches a queen (Dawn Addams, who starred in Charlie Chaplin's last film, A King in New York) honesty and dignity as he accompanies her on a mission to sell her jewels to finance her deposed husband's coup. In the 1967 color episode "Interlude in Venice," Simon comes to the aid of an American heiress who becomes a pawn in a blackmail plot. Lois Maxwell (better known as James Bond's Miss Moneypenny) costars as her (wicked?) stepmother. In the 1966 color episode "The Russian Prisoner," Simon comes to the aid of a Russian scientist who has had "an attack of revisionism" and whom the KGB will stop at nothing to keep from defecting. I love the Saint and I enjoyed watching the episodes contained on Set 1 of the Saint. However, I was terribly disappointed when I found out that Set 1 only contains 6 episodes. Effectively, the price for Set 1, is the same as an entire season of many other great shows. I think that this is a real rip off! I'm certainly not going to buy more Saint DVDs until the producer brings down the price to a more reasonable range.

Roger Moore IS the Saint first and foremost his appearances both before and after only bracket this role. There had been others who played the roles before Moore and after but they are only imitators for those of us who grew up watching this series. Each week we watched waiting for the magical moment when the halo and the lilting theme appeared. With that much nostalgia involved I was a little concerned that this set could not possibly live up to my memories. I was wrong, they are just as good as I remembered. Yes the special effects are not up to today's standards, the 'exotic' locations I remembered as a child are now very obviously stock footage tacked onto scenes shot elsewhere but that doesn't even matter. Once Moore takes the stage he is the Saint, we are in those locations and delighting as he makes fools of the police, foils the villians and saves the day, all withough mussing his perfectly coifed hair.

This set includes the first six color episodes of the series. The episodes are: The Queen's Ransom - set in Monte Carlo; Interlude In Venice - set in Venice (featuring Lois Maxwell - Moneypenny in the Bond films); The Russian Prisoner - set in Geneva; The Reluctant Revolution - set in San Paul, Brazil; The Helpful Pirate - set in Hamburg and the Convenient Monster - set in Scotland.

In spite of the shortcomings mentioned above the shows are enjoyable to those who do not have fond memories of the original airings. What was lacking in special effects what made up for in writing and acting. The stories all have an O'Henry like twist, just when you think it's over or you have solved the problem something else pops up and changes everything. In addition many actors who appeared here went on to other larger roles, so there is the bonus of seeing them 'when'.

I think that anyone who remembers enjoying these shows when they ran on broadcast TV will enjoy they again those who are much younger, ie under 25, may not get so much out of it.

One additional note - these hour long episodes are just over 50 minutes long, not today's 42!

Seasons 2, 3 and 4 are really the best of this show. It's starting to fizzle a little, but here in season 3 it is at full stride. The genius in this show is the script. So well crafted. It took me some time to catch on to this and when I first tried to watch it, thought to myself, "how lame", but then I gave the boys another chance.....I'm 45 years old, sat together with my 25 year old daughter who was already hooked on, watched a couple of episodes on HBO and alas...I was hooked. I am now living in the Middle East and bought the first two series before coming back out....on Friday nights I can sit here and watch the same episodes repeatedly, laughing harder and harder each time! Absolutely hilarious stuff....I only need to look at Bubbles and start laughing...and him on that go-cart...omg! too funny! love all the characters, Ricky going into that house and being attacked by "a killer kitten" Ha! Priceless......I hope the humor never ends...will definately be buying the latest season!

Steven Seagal needed a new approach to his standard head-busting heroics, so he teamed up with Keenen Ivory Wayans for this routine 1996 action flick. This time stone-faced Steve plays Los Angeles homicide detective Jack Cole, newly transplanted from New York and teamed up with Jim Campbell (Wayans). They're assigned to track down "The Family Man," a serial killer who earned his nickname by crucifying entire families and leaving religious graffiti as his calling card. The case heats up when the latest victim turns out to be Cole's ex-wife, and Cole is considered a primary suspect. That makes Seagal get really mad--you don't wanna get Seagal too upset, y'know--but he still has time to quote Buddhist wisdom and crack wise with Wayans, who plays it relatively straight as the practical half of this partnership. It's typical Seagal stuff all the way, with obligatory fight scenes every 10 minutes or so, but Seagal fans will enjoy it, and Brian Cox makes a suitably hissable villain. --Jeff Shannon

"Homie the Clown don't mess around and of course neither does Seagal" 2009-08-21

This week's feature has been on Sid's to do list for a very very long time and thanks to On demand at the North Pole North we were able to witness the greatest onscreen chemistry since Brett Q and the adolecesant boys he "coached" at a High School in Hicksville, Mississippi. You thought Sid was going with Swayze and McQueen there didn't you? No. They will never be approached. How dare you even think that? So it was with great anticipation that we viewed The Glimmer Man and it did not disapoint.

Seagal plays a former government operative with a checkered past turned New York Buddhist cop. Oh yeah oh yeah. He is teamed up with Keenan Ivory Wayans( he was available?) to take down a sadistic serial killer. This flick was actually made in 1996 but it had a 1991ish look. That's a couple of stars right there. The only thing that was missing out of the Seagal formula in this one was he wasn't his normal studly self. There was no Seagal love interest that would have undoubedly laughed him out of her trailer on set. Oh wait that happened with Nikki Cox anyway.

Sid really can't quantify how good this flick was. There were parts that were ridiculously enjoyable. But the flick got overwhelmed by copious ammounts of football talk and predictions. Dolphins stay really good, the Pack get a lot better, and Brett Favre gets what's coming to him if you're wondering. Ok let's wrap it up with a quick drive-in totals:

62 impossible moves by Seagal.

"A Glimmer Of Hope? Maybe Not." 2008-09-14

With "Under Siege 2" behind him, Seagal's descent was under way by the time "The Glimmer Man" came to be. Without exaggeration, this is probably our hero's most narcicistic film before his repetitious DTV outings, and one of his lazier productions overall: storyline? - reworked from "Se7en"; action? - same ol', same ol'; supporting cast? - decent, but who cares since Seagal's the star?

Okay, maybe I'm being a bit harsh, since this movie is far removed from Seagal's worst offerings, but when it comes to his theatrical releases, this shouldn't be your choice to introduce yourself or a friend to the aikido master.

Seagal plays Jack Cole, a new age detective transfered to the west coast to aid the investigation of a brutal serial killer called "the Family Man". Finding a reluctant partner in Lt. Jim Campbell (Keenan Ivory Wayans), the pair must work their way through the killer's web of religious and political motives...before discovering that there may be more than killer, and more than one cause to the slayings.

If Steven Seagal knows anything, it's how to toot his own horn: aside from being an unbeatable fighting machine (" ...like Bruce Lee, even better") and a philosophy-spouting guru, he regularly outdoes his partner in the humor department. Apparently Wayans - who penned totally un-funny material like "In Living Color" and directed laughless films like "Scary Movie" - is comedically challenged in this movie, becoming Seagal's whipping boy by being tricked into eating powdered deer penis and routinely being shown up by "Mister Laughs" Seagal.

Forgive me for being upset with my hero, but this is probably him at his self-serving best: his will to dominate Wayans and make a fool of him erases the entire premise of a buddy-cop picture.

Then again, Seagal can't take the blame for the entire bad show: the acting of co-star Wayans and bad-guys Bob Gunton ("Patch Adams"), Brian Cox ("Troy"), and John M. Jackson ("J.A.G.") falls into the "ho-hum" and "blah" categories. The baddies are less threatening than they are fat, old, and slightly gaydar-alerting (sharing pools, drinks, and bathrobes? Hmm...). And the fight choreographer apparently only had Seagal's previous movies to use as reference, since there's absolutely nothing new to be found here (believe it, Wayans actually has the best fight of the film).

In the film's defense, the showdown in the church is probably the most tense scene Seagal as ever acted in (not saying much). His wardrobe is good for a laugh. Though dull, the five fights are sound and feature the level of violence we've come to expect from Seagal - iron spike through the head, anyone? And overall, the film has the production values to keep it from looking sloppy.

Simply, if you managed to put up with the likes of "On Deadly Ground" and "Fire Down Below", watching "Glimmer Man" shouldn't be too tough...but watch it with a hotdog in-hand, so you've got something to divert your attention to when Steven gets preachy.

"Segal's first foray into the buddy genre" 2008-09-07

The Glimmer Man is Steven Segal's first forary into a buddy movie. Kennan Ivory Wayana gives some good one liners in the film and he even gets beat up a few times. The film has some nice action sequences and some chemsitry between Segal and Wayans. I give *** out of ****.

I guess Seagal wanted to be a little like Eastwood here; giving a more forensic approach to his movies, a little twist here and there...and why not a little of Seagal's special recipe of bone crushing formula, it wont due any harm...right?..Wrong, this movie is the perfect example of Segal's downfall from stardom. Since Seagal isn't as thin or as fast as he used to be, he needs a co-star to have a little more screen time so Seagal can catch his breath and eat little more doughnuts. Seriously Seagal hit top bottom after this, with the exception of Fire Down Below and Exit Wounds, all of Segal's future movies following that sucked.

In Glimmer Man Seagal plays Jack Cole, an Ex government intelligence operative known as "The Glimmer Man," because he could move so quickly and quietly that his victims would only see a glimmer before they died. in fact that is so BS, Segal moves slower than his previous movies here, his gut is beginning to grow and his acting is stale and wooden. anyhow back to the movie, Cole is assigned to work with An L.A. police detective named Jim Campbell (Keenen Ivory Wayans) they are both on the look for a serial killer known as the "Family Man" he is given that name because...well he kills families; and aside from killing them he tortures and crucifies them after their deaths. After a string of murders the killer gets personal, he kills Coles wife..and you know what that means...that's right...its payback time, but it seems that this killings are beginning to get weird, there is a copycat making the murders look like "the Family Man"....now the question is Who is the killer, the "family man or the copycat?

Along with these psychos we have a local crime boss doing dealings with the Russians, somehow its all connected and don't expect a clever twist because there really isn't. I give them credit for adding some suspense here and there, but Segal doesn't belong in this movie, he feels out of place. The only good actors in this movie are Keenen Ivory Wayans and Brian Cox. So yeah, rent it or wait for it to be shown on cable, but don't buy it, not worth it.
